As the owner of 3 dogs (Odin, Loki, & Willy Wonka) and 1 cat (Freya) I'm a pretty dedicated pet owner. Everyday I walk the dogs, clean the litter box, feed a holistic diet, and smother my pets with love- just like a pet parent should.  As a business owner, I have come into contact with tons of pet parents who do just the same.  Over the last 5 years I have bumped into loving pet owners who have told me great stories of their current and past pets.  Most of the stories have happy endings, some didn't, but all of the pets were loved beyond belief.  As pet parents, Randy and I have seen our own pets have little health issues like ear infections, ticks, cut paw pads, fevers, etc.  We've even had a couple of big scares.  Freya (our cat) fell from our 2nd floor landing a couple of weeks after we brought her home knocking herself silly and bleeding all over the place; Odin (our 110lb German Sheperd) had a terrible dizzy spell and had to be rushed to the emergency vet; and she also got bit by a tick, got the tick out from between her toes, but still contracted lyme disease.  After feeling helpless each time we had an incident I decided that I wanted to know what to do when there was a first aid issue.  I felt that as a dedicated pet parent I should know what to do when something happened.  As the owner of 3 pet related businesses, I felt it was my responsiblty to make sure my staff and I should know what to do when at a clients home.  Between my "kids", my staff's "kids", and all of our clients' "kids" we come into contact with thousands of animals each year.  In early 2008 I flew to Seattle and took a very intense 3 day class on instructing pet first aid.  I completed the course with flying colors and am now a certified Pet Tech First Aid Instructor (Instructor # 1375).  I learned more than I ever thought possible and have been teaching classes, doing seminars, and helping pet owners and pets since the plane landed in Chicago.
